Mid-Autumn Celebration at St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou

Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the most beautiful season around the year. On Sept. 13, a themed celebration of Mid-Autumn Festival, “Enjoy the Full Moon Home and Abroad, Embrace the Reunion on Mid-Autumn Day”, was held in St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou. Cancer patients and their family from different nations such as Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and Canada, etc. joined the special event.

At the carefully-arranged scene, mooncake, various fruits, pastries were served. Along with the melodious music of Guzheng, a kind of Chinese traditional musical instrument, aroused the festive atmosphere, the event officially started. Soon after the pleasing sound faded, a costume show of Han Chinese clothing was presented by several cancer patients and their family. The Chinese style performance really impressed the attendees with a feast for their eyes.

Han Chinese clothing show

Upon Mid-Autumn Festival, a traditional and flavorous pastry, mooncake was ready to be enjoyed. A special section of the party, making mooncake, allowed exotic patients and their family experience the joy of making mooncake all by themselves. Through every step, the whole process of making and tasting mooncake was a great opportunity for them to catch a glimpse of traditional Chinese culture and food, deeply understanding the beautiful meaning of the Mid-Autumn Festival, family reunion and happiness.

Among the staff, Indonesian interpreters presented a dancing performance. As the bridge between the patient and medical staff, the interpreter has a close connection with the patient. Their performance received warm applause and the party came to a climax.

Celebrating birthday of liver cancer patient from Malaysia

The next day happened to be the birthday of liver cancer patient from Malaysia. Medical staff of 4th floor threw a birthday party at the scene. As the cake was presented, the birthday song was sang by all the attendees. The patient was touched and said gratefully, “thanks for you all being here to celebrate my birthday, I’m thrilled. Best wishes to everyone here, I also wish a good recovery for all the cancer patients.”

Playing games was the most exciting and joyful part of the event. Among other games, picking up ping-pong ball with chopstick and circling the gift was the most popular. Everyone was actively involved and they showed their talents for winning prizes. Continuous laughter brought the event to a close.

Mr. He Langbing, the director of the International Affairs Department of MCHG, also sent a blessing to the patients. He said: "Thank you all for your family and friends to participate in this event. I am very happy to be here with you in the joyful celebration of family reunion. I hope the performance will bring laughter and happiness to everyone. We are willing to make the best efforts to make patients and friends from all over the world at home. I wish you all a quick recovery and happy life!"

*Surgery, in addition to the appropriate chemotherapy and radiotherapy, are effective in treating early cancer, but certain patients in late stage of cancer may not be tolerate surgery well as they can be relatively weak. A combination of carefully planned minimally invasive therapy, chemotherapy or radiotherapy can effectively reduce the side effects and discomfort of treatment and may help patient get better efficacy.
