RIPIN

RIPIN: Remember not to indulge in your illness, try to be more positive and make more friends and talk to them.

Indonesian 66-year-old RIPIN was diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) stage IV in Penang in December 2016. After detailed consultation in Medan Office of St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou, he came for minimally invasive therapy in June 2017. With 3 sessions of microwave ablation, one course of interventional therapy and triple oxygen therapy and natural therapy, tumors in his liver are all necrotic and he is currently in a stable condition.

Struck by life-threatening liver cancer, confront it positively

66-year-old RIPIN is from Medan Indonesia, suffering from hepatitis B and 6-year liver cirrhosis. In his semi-annual check-up in Penang Malaysia in December 2016, tumor marker AFP is tested higher, indicating his liver cirrhosis might have developed into liver cancer, which was confirmed through CT scan later. Tumors were scattered on left lobe of his liver and after biopsy, he was diagnosed as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) stage IV. Doctor in Penang hospital suggested him surgery to remove part of his liver and tumors but was rejected by him and his family concerning about his age, high risk of complications and infection, unbearable pain and hard-to-healing wounds caused by surgery.

RIPIN is a truck driver and in charge of transporting the goods to factories. He enjoys talking with workers, he says, “People tend to think over and over again on their illness and feel unhappy for a long time which is bad even worse for their condition. I think we should be more positive and open, try to make more friends and talk to them, it will help us more.” After his diagnosis, he continued to work and live as usual with optimism.

Through talking with his friends who were closely concerned about his condition, RIPIN knew that many Indonesian cancer patients went to China for minimally invasive treatment. He says, “Many cancer patients from Indonesia insist oversea cancer treatment in China since China’s minimally invasive technology is more advanced and has good efficacy with no hair loss and no vomit. My families also supported that I should come to China for minimally invasive treatment.”

“Afterwards, my friend recommended consultation first in Medan Office of St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou, so I went and consulted with experts there. After evaluation, they helped tailor me a plan of treatment, and introduce minimally invasive technologies, admission procedures and visa processing matters to me. After learning that I made my decision to come here.”

On June 13, 2017, accompanied by his friend, RIPIN was admitted into St.Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou. In the next day, Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) arranged him checkup and held a consultation to discuss and decide what was best way to treat his cancer. Finally, experts agreed on the personal treatment plan of 3 sessions of microwave ablation, one course of interventional therapy, combining with triple oxygen therapy and natural therapy.

RIPIN and his attending doctor Lin Jing

RIPIN’s attending doctor Lin Jing told us, “After we considered his age, physique and his will of no surgery, we agreed on microwave ablation, which is to insert microwave thermal-coagulation needles into tumor lesions and release micro waves to directly kill cancer cells under the guidance of type B ultrasonic, CT scan, MRI or other image equipment. Microwave ablation has been used in the treatment of liver cancer for more than 30 years and also applied in treatment of lung cancer, breast cancer and pancreatic cancer etc. which has proven to yield good efficacy.

When I had microwave ablation for the first time, after doctor gave me local anaesthetic, he inserted microwave needles into my chest, I felt a little bit pain at that moment but it is acceptable and then I fell asleep slowly. As I woke up operation was already over and after I was sent back to my ward for a while and I could be up and around. I felt no side effect, I didn’t feel like vomiting and I had no hair loss. Two or three days later after microwave ablation, I went out to visit Guangzhou Tower with my friend, it was a glorious place which deserved a visit.

Considerate and convenient service left deep impression

“During my hospitalization, what left me the deepest impression was the considerate and convenient service here provided. This is my fourth revisit to St.Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou, I have never been in China before I came here, so I was quite worried about visa application and admission at the beginning, later on, staff in Medan Office helped me apply for my visa and when I arrived in Guangzhou, ongoing support like airport pick-up and accommodation was well arranged for me, that’s very good. What we need is to concentrate on our treatment.”

It was RIPIN’s fourth time to have reexamination in St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou in November 2017. After three sessions of microwave ablation and one course of interventional therapy, triple oxygen therapy and natural therapy, the latest MRI results shows that tumors in his liver are all necrotic and he is currently in a stable condition, which only requires semi-annual review in the future.
