Gathering Global Expertise, Shaping the Future of Cancer Care Together

WAIO

Cancer is a global health challenge we face together. Cancer treatment should not stop at national borders.

On July 19, 2025, the 4th ASEAN International Oncology Integrative Medicine Session, jointly hosted by authoritative institutions including the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association (CACA), the Chinese Academy of Integrative Medicine Development Strategy, and the World Academy of Integrative Oncology (WAIO), and co-organized by Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, Guangdong Anti-Cancer Association, Hong Kong and Macau Anti-Cancer Association, and Guangzhou Modern Cancer Hospital , will be grandly held in Guangzhou, China.。

This session will bring together leading oncology experts from China, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, and other ASEAN countries. They will engage in in-depth exchanges and sharing on key topics including non-surgical cancer treatments, minimally invasive combination therapies, and the integration of Chinese and Western medicine.

This grand event will serve as a new starting point for promoting cancer prevention and treatment cooperation under the “Belt and Road” initiative, bringing more hope and possibilities to cancer patients in Southeast Asia.

    • Malaysia - Colorectal Cancer - Ms. Zhang

In July 2024, Ms. Zhang developed abdominal pain and was subsequently diagnosed with sigmoid colon cancer. She underwent resection locally. Shortly after surgery, her condition progressed rapidly, developing diffuse liver metastases, with the largest lesion measuring 46x41 mm. Due to tumor involvement of critical vascular areas, achieving local control was difficult, and conventional treatments faced limitations. In September 2024, she was admitted to Guangzhou Modern Cancer Hospital. After a joint assessment by the MDT specialist team, including Professor He Jianyu, an integrated minimally invasive treatment plan of "cryoablation + interventional embolization" was formulated for her. A re-examination three months later showed significant tumor shrinkage and a marked improvement in her mental state. By February 2025, a follow-up CT scan revealed the tumor had essentially subsided. Her physical strength recovered well, and she resumed daily activities.

    • Malaysia - Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma - Chong Chee Wei

In October 2023, Mr. Chong sought medical attention for persistent headaches and was diagnosed with Stage IV nasopharyngeal carcinoma with cervical lymph node metastasis, the largest lesion measuring 7.5 cm in diameter. He underwent several rounds of radiotherapy and chemotherapy locally with poor efficacy, resulting in a drastic weight loss of 30 kg. In April 2024, he traveled to Guangzhou Modern Cancer Hospital for treatment. He received a course of integrated minimally invasive therapy: interventional therapy + targeted therapy + particle implantation. Post-treatment, the tumor shrank by two-thirds, and his physical condition improved significantly. Currently, Mr. Chong's health has markedly improved: the tumor has substantially reduced, his weight is steadily increasing, and his mental state has also recovered well.

Diagnosed with breast cancer during pregnancy, underwent a left mastectomy. Postpartum hormonal fluctuations caused the tumor to rapidly expand from 3cm to 29cm within 3 months, accompanied by ulceration and infection risk. Under the leadership of Professor Song, the MDT team tailored a treatment plan including interventional therapy + R0 radical resection + postoperative vacuum sealing drainage (VSD) technology + subsequent breast reconstruction. They successfully removed the massive tumor weighing 3.5kg. The patient recovered well post-surgery and regained a new life.

    • Russian Dual Primary Cancers (lung cancer+rectal cancer): Radik

Radik, a 63-year-old Russian engineer, was diagnosed with the rare occurrence of synchronous primary malignancies: rectal adenocarcinoma and lung squamous cell carcinoma. After seeking consultations across multiple countries, he consistently received recommendations for "surgical resection with permanent stoma". Professor Song Shijun emphasized: "The distinct biological behavior, pathological types, and staging of these two separate tumors demand a dual-focused therapeutic approach." Following a MDT discussion, Radik underwent combined interventional therapy and immunotherapy. Radik's lung and intestinal tumors shrank significantly, and his symptoms of coughing and bloody stools disappeared.

    • Indonesian Breast Cancer Patient:Ms. Lin

Ms. Lin was unexpectedly diagnosed with breast cancer, which had already metastasized to her axillary lymph nodes and bones. The tumor was compressing her spinal cord, putting her at risk of paralysis. At our hospital, she underwent spinal surgery combined with systematic endocrine therapy. As a result, the tumors in her body achieved a Partial Response (PR) status, meaning the tumors had shrunk by more than 50%. Her muscle strength in both lower limbs fully recovered, and she successfully overcame the crisis of paralysis.

    • Indonesian Kidney Cancer Patient: Mr. An

After being diagnosed with clear cell renal cell carcinoma, Mr. An did not receive timely treatment, which led to metastases to his brain, lungs, and multiple bones. He was even bedridden due to paralysis. However, after undergoing our hospital’s individualized treatment plan of “targeted therapy combined with immunotherapy”, within a month, Mr. An’s pain was significantly alleviated. All metastatic lesions throughout his body were effectively controlled. His bilateral muscle strength recovered from grade 1 to grade 5, enabling him to stand and walk on his own.

    • Vietnamese Cholangiocarcinoma Patient: Đặng Thị Len

Six years ago, upon diagnosis, her tumor compression led to jaundice, loss of appetite, drastic weight loss, and extreme physical weakness. Her condition was complex and challenging. The local hospital estimated her survival period to be only 3 - 6 months. However, after receiving a comprehensive treatment of seed implantation, interventional therapy, and photodynamic therapy at Guangzhou Modern Cancer Hospital , her tumor was effectively controlled. To date, there has been no recurrence, and she has been “clinically cured” for six years.

Due to persistent fatigue, VO VAN HOA experienced recurrent low-grade fever, distending pain in the upper right abdomen, headaches, and facial nerve involvement, resulting in numbness and pain in the jaw and lips. In 2019, he was diagnosed with massive hepatocellular carcinoma. Unwilling to undergo traditional surgery locally, he sought treatment at Guangzhou Modern Cancer Hospital , where he underwent minimally invasive therapy combining interventional therapy and NanoKnife ablation. As a result, the original 70×60 mm tumor was completely necrotized with no residual active cancer cells. Six years later, he remains recurrence-free and has returned to a normal life.
