In January 2026, sunlight streamed through the ward window in Guangzhou. Arnel said to his attending physician, Dr. Dong Kui, “Doctor, I can speak normally now.” Just six months earlier, his voice had been as faint as a whisper—so soft that even his wife had to lean close to his lips to hear him.

Silent Alarm

In June 2025, Arnel, a Filipino, noticed his voice growing hoarse. He initially blamed it on fatigue—until speaking became a struggle. He went to a local hospital for tests. A CT scan revealed a 3.5×2.2×2.3 cm mass in the upper lobe of his left lung, along with abnormal nodules in the mediastinum and left hilar region. The biopsy confirmed: left lung adenocarcinoma with mediastinal metastasis, stage IIIA (T2N2M0).  

Local doctors advised immediate surgical resection. Standing in the consultation room, Arnel’s mind was torn. “I knew my condition was serious,” he said, “but I wanted to see if there were better options.”

Searching for a Glimmer of Light

At night, he searched online alone, until “Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou  caught his eye. He dialed the number of their Manila service center. Unfamiliar terms like interventional therapy, cryoablation, and minimally invasive procedures began to offer him a glimpse of another possibility.

At 9 a.m. on August 13, 2025, Arnel completed his hospital admission procedures. Further test results proved even more severe than expected: the tumor had progressed from Stage IIIA to Stage IV. In addition to the primary lesion in his left lung, mediastinal lymph node metastasis and multiple intracranial metastases had also appeared. The cause of his hoarseness was finally identified—the mediastinal tumor was compressing the recurrent laryngeal nerve.

A Precise Battle  

Faced with a complex condition, the hospital’s MDT tailored an integrated minimally invasive treatment plan for him: interventional therapy combined with ozone therapy and targeted therapy.  

On August 16, 2025, Arnel underwent his first interventional therapy under local anesthesia. Guided by DSA imaging, a microcatheter less than 2 mm in diameter precisely reached the artery supplying blood to the tumor. High-concentration chemotherapy drugs were infused directly into the tumor, while embolic particles blocked the vessels nourishing it. The benefits of precision and low side effects were fully evident in Arnel’s case. According to Arnel, aside from needing bed rest on the first day, he experienced only mild hiccups and minor gastrointestinal discomfort.

Awakening of the Vocal Cords

By January 2026, Arnel had completed six cycles of treatment. After the second cycle, his condition improved significantly—CT scans showed tumor shrinkage, but what he felt even more deeply was his voice, once suppressed by the tumor, slowly coming back to life.  

 

From only being able to whisper, to being heard up close, then to soft conversation, and now nearly back to normal. During treatment, Arnel even gained a few kilograms. He talked with fellow Filipino patients—the side effects here are truly much milder. Although the cost of seeking treatment abroad was a bit tight, he felt it was all worth it.

What moved Arnel most was not just the advanced treatments, but the warmth he received at every step. From the smile of the pick-up staff at the airport, to the attentive care of doctors and nurses in the ward, to the accurate communication from the interpreters—every detail reassured him as an overseas patient. His attending physician, Dr. Dong Kui, visited him daily, explaining each procedure in simple, clear language. Arnel felt he was not fighting alone.

Everything Will Be Better 

In the beginning, Arnel and his family were deeply saddened by the diagnosis. But they knew life had to go on. Guided by faith, supported by family and friends, and accompanied by his devoted wife, Arnel chose to face it all with courage.  

 

Now, as his condition continues to improve, the voice once silenced by the tumor is growing clear again under the sunlight of Guangzhou. Arnel knows that this journey across the seas has given him back more than just his voice—it has restored his confidence and hope to move forward in life.

*Surgery, in addition to the appropriate chemotherapy and radiotherapy, are effective in treating early cancer, but certain patients in late stage of cancer may not be tolerate surgery well as they can be relatively weak. A combination of carefully planned minimally invasive therapy, chemotherapy or radiotherapy can effectively reduce the side effects and discomfort of treatment and may help patient get better efficacy.
