What Are Hematologic Malignancies? – Three Main Types

Hematologic malignancies are cancers originating from the bone marrow, blood, or lymphatic system, accounting for approximately 10% of all new cancer cases worldwide. According to the WHO classification, they fall into three main categories:

Leukemia

Leukemia is a malignancy originating from hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow. Abnormal white blood cells proliferate excessively, crowding out normal red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. In the Philippines, leukemia accounts for about 40% of all childhood cancers and is the most common cancer among Filipino children.

Lymphoma is a malignancy of the lymphatic system, which includes lymph nodes, spleen, tonsils, bone marrow, etc., and is spread throughout the body. In the Philippines, there are about 4,140 new cases of lymphoma per year, accounting for 0.34% of all deaths.

Multiple myeloma is a malignancy of plasma cells (a type of white blood cell that produces antibodies).
